Augmentation mammoplasties involve the small breast being made larger by the insertion of a pre-formed ‘gelatine-like’ material implant, into a pocket behind each breast, through a small incision.

It is a fact, unfortunately, that no amount of exercise, hormonal treatment or creams will have any noticeable effect on the size of small breasts.

There is no method, other than surgical correction using implants, that can increase the size and fullness of the breast and thus augmentation mammoplasty has become a very popular method of enhancing the female form.

Breast Augmentation (Mammoplasty) - Frequently Asked Questions

How long has the surgeon been doing Breast Augmentations?
I have been performing this operation for over 20 years on a regular basis and on average 5 per day.

Is this a common operation?
Breast augmentation is a very common operation. It is in fact 2nd commonest operation both in U.S. and U.K.

Is it safe?
There are 6 overwhelming studies to prove the safety of this procedure. They can be easily access on the internet.

Is it a painful operation?
There is usually slight discomfort and due to the new technology, the pain is very slight. However when an implant is placed under the muscle, the pain is slightly more intense, however we inject long term painkillers to reduce the effect.

Which incision and why?
This is usually determined between the patient and the surgeon depending on his experience, natural case and type of implant used. However the commonest is underneath the Breast or Areola.

Placement of the implant; above or below the muscle?
The placement of the implant is decided by the shape of breast, type of implant and the frame of the chest. In a thin individual it is advisable to place it under the muscle whereas an individual who has an existing breast with or without a slight sag, above muscle would be more preferable.

Type of implant?
I prefer the cohesive textured silicone implant, whether they are round or shaped, depending on the existing breast tissue.

Massage?
The massage is unnecessary with the new implants as it used to be a requirement with older types.

When can I resume work?
We advise patients to have it easy for at least one week and for strenuous exercises after 6 weeks.

Can I breast feed?
Yes, It is possible.

When can I resume intercourse?
It is advisable not to have vigorous intercourse in the first week after surgery.

Exercise?
We strongly advise vigorous exercise of any type, should not be taller in the first 6 weeks after surgery.

How long do the implants last?
The manufacturers have recommended 15 years however a scan should be done to check the implants, and if no change or deterioration have taken place then the implants do not need to be changed.

How do I check for lumps?
The breast augmentation should not interfere on hinder checking for lumps as the implants are placed behind the breast tissue. Also scans and mammograms can identify lumps with ease.

Can any person have a Breast Augmentation?
No, if the breast bags are to an unacceptable level, then it would be advisable to have a breast Uplift, with or without a Breast Augmentation.

Is there drainage?
Usually no! Only in very exceptional cases is this needed. Due to new technology this is not usually necessary.

Stitched?
In most cases, we use dissolvable stitches, which naturally do not need to be removed, therefore causing less discomfort.
